Do I need Planning Permission to extend over existing garage?

We are looking to extend our home. Its a 3 bed semi detached house with a garage attached to the side. We want to build on top of the garage. We will not actually be extending the original 'footprint' of the property or building higher then the original roof. Would we need planning permission for this?
