When someone's gathering signatures for a ballot petition, what's the catch?

I was at my friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart yesterday when this fellow outside asked me to sign a petition that would put a proposition on the ballot against eminent domain and another for Hospitalized children (I forget what he said about it...). Is there any sort of catch? Any downside to signing these sorts of things?
