Which word is grammatically correct after neither/nor?

I want to write the sentence, "I hope neither the raccoon nor the possum (was/were) carrying rabies." Unfortunately, I didn't pay enough attention to grammar in school. Should I use "was" or "were" after "possum" or should I completely rephrase the sentence?
