Does coffee increase productivity?

while visiting a company during it's third shift operation, I noticed almost all the employees in the break room were drinking coffee. It was 2 a.m. and the shift ran to 6:30 a.m. The coffee was free and provided by the employer. Do you think it would be a better idea if more companys provided their employees with free coffee? Does it help production?
