Genie Intellicode outside opener?

i have a Genie Intellicode garage door outside opener... I forgot if we replaced the actual garage opener Machine (inside the garage) but i think the outside opener just needs battery's... I cant program it by pressing prog. and 8. Nothing lights up. What kind of battery's does it use? I also dont see a program on on the inside machine and im thinking that along time ago we got a new machine that i forgot about... could that be a problem??:)
